Katrina Lambert

Katrina became an #IWill Ambassador in 2019. Read her social action story:

When I was 15, I read an article on my way to school that said that 15 year old Scottish girls have some of the worst mental health in the world. That inspired me to do something to tackle the problem. I applied for the Girlguiding British Youth Council Delegation and for two years I worked on campaigns and policies relating to mental health, sexual harassment in schools and gender stereotyping.

From there, I took on new roles and my social action grew. I became the youngest and only Scottish member of Youth for Change, a network of young activists in the UK, Bangladesh and Tanzania working to end gender-based violence. I campaigned against period poverty. I also worked on the Youth Volunteering Innovation Project (YouthVIP), producing recommendations for the voluntary sector in Scotland. These campaigns have influenced national level policy and will have a positive impact on many thousands of young people.

Through my work with Youth For Change, Female Genital Mutilation is now a mandatory part of the Relationships and Sex Education Curriculum. Due to the period poverty campaign, it is now Scottish Government policy to provide free sanitary products in all schools, colleges and universities. Meanwhile, the YouthVIP report will affect the experience of volunteering and social action for young people all across Scotland.

My latest projects include working on the Young Women Lead programme, where 30 women under 30 are running our own Parliamentary inquiry into young women’s participation in sport. I have also been part of a group of Young Human Rights Defenders and because of this, in May 2019 became the youngest ever to present evidence to the UN Committee Against Torture in Geneva.

Social action has so many amazing benefits.I think that all young people should have the chance to experience it.
