Ethan became an #IWill ambassador in 2019. Read his social action story here:
I think it’s really important for young people to learn from their peers, instead of adults telling them what they should and shouldn’t do. That’s why I developed my own project called ‘Getting the Message Across’ to spread the word to young people about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, as well as the importance of positive mental health for young people.
With the support of Govan Youth Information Project, I devised an interactive workshop that has now been seen by more than 2,500 secondary school pupils in the southside of Glasgow. I also applied for funding to the Youthbank Big Grant Giveaway and the project was awarded a full grant of £2,536, which allowed me to take the workshop into primary schools too.
Most recently, I organised a football tournament to raise more awareness of the consequences of drug and alcohol abuse, while promoting local youth groups and football clubs. This event attracted over 200 young participants and 400 spectators.
I’ve seen how sport can have an amazing effect on young people from deprived areas, as it makes a positive impact on their health and helps bring together people from different cultures and backgrounds. In fact, sport’s the reason why I started volunteering in the first place.
When I was 10, I began volunteering at my local community sports hub, coaching football and other sports. Since then, I’ve coached football at the Erasmus+ event in Croatia and accompanied children from local primary schools to the ‘CommonHealth Games’. I still coach local children in football and badminton every week. I’ve also helped secure funding to provide free sport and equipment for people in the community who would otherwise be unable to participate.
In the future, I plan on becoming involved in more sports coaching and hope to make the football tournament an annual event.
