Cerys Offord

Cerys became an #IWill ambassador in 2019. Read her social action story here:

After our entire family was diagnosed with an extremely rare debilitating genetic cancer, I wanted to increase awareness of the condition and raise money for a local centre that has provided some much-needed respite for us.

Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome (VHL) can be passed from generation to generation, and it affects me, my mum and my two brothers. Our family has benefited from therapeutic respite care at Whiteleys Retreat in Ayr, which provides free breaks for young people and their families with cancer and life-altering illnesses.

Together with my family, I’ve taken part in fundraising activities on their behalf and have also raised money for VHL UK / Ireland. People close to me would probably say that social action has helped me become more confident and outgoing, and unafraid to face challenges.

always felt empathy for people who are going through a difficult time, whatever their age or situation, and want to do everything I can to help out. During the winter months, I clear the paths of snow for elderly and vulnerable neighbors, and throughout the year I help my gran who’s living with Parkinson’s.

Recently, I’ve been recruited to support people living with Alzheimer’s in a care home, and am excited about the prospect of cooking and baking with them.

In our local area, I also work as a young volunteer and fundraiser for a small charity that helps alleviate food and fuel poverty. I’ve spoken with the charity manager about youth activities and am currently organising a large event that will benefit the whole community. And if I have any spare time, I can’t resist helping out at our local animal charity.

Social action has massively increased my creativity and commercial awareness, which I hope will help me develop new fundraising approaches in the future.
