Barnardo’s Scotland working in partnership to support Young Carers in Aberdeen City

Aberdeen Young Carers Services is a joint initiative between Barnardo’s Scotland and Aberdeen City Council, and is the first of its kind opened by the charity in the north east.

The young carers service, supports young people who look after a relative who has a disability, illness, mental health, or substance misuse.

The first group of young people to access the service are already benefitting from the support they have received, with some attending the recently.

One young carer attending the service said: “I like helping my mum look after my sisters so mum can get some peace. I like helping them bath and put them into their beds. They’ve helped me a lot to have some special time just for me to have some fun”.

Young Carers are likely to be one of the biggest single groups of children in need, estimates suggest that in a city the size of Aberdeen, there may be up to 2000 children and young people aged between 5 to 18 years who undertake caring responsibilities for a family member or close friend.
