Lucy's journey to becoming a youth worker
Lucy is a youth worker at Girvan Youth Trust, as part of our My Learner Journey series, Lucy has shared her journey about how she got to where she is today.
I first got involved with youth work when I was 14 and started going along to the local youth club. Over the years, I had some many opportunities offered to me through youth work participation including residential weekends, sailing voyages and training.
When I left school in 2012, with no more than Standard Grade qualifications and really no idea of what I wanted to do in life, I was offered the chance of a Youth Work Apprenticeship with my local youth organisation - I jumped at the chance. Seven years later, I'm still with the same organisation and I am currently working towards a Degree in Youth Work (I only decided to go to Uni when I was 22!).
Youth work has given me the confidence and ability to step outside my comfort zone - I've traveled to the other side of the world on my own - but I've also developed my skills as a Youth Worker whilst having a positive impact on the lives of local young people - the same way my Youth Workers did almost a decade ago.
